The UK manga scene at a glance |

The UK manga scene has existed for a number of years, but since I am a late comer to manga and even later into the scene in general; the history before 2004 is a mystery to me. There is however a great deal of information out there such as dead forums, or from people on various fansites telling people about it. I personally feel there is a distinct lack of manga groups in the UK, there needs to be more. Few people are willing to take the plunge though. Manga/Anime related events are changing too; becoming more commercialised. In 2007 there will be a large commercial event in London on top of the bi-annual London Expo. The fan run convention is still king though, and there are several up and down the country throughout the year. The cons of old are still going strong and becoming increasingly popular, ever more younger people seem to attend them along with the many veterans who have been in the scene for years. These days though things are looking better than ever with the advent of small manga publishers in particular Itch, The DFC, and various other small enterprises; some with unique business models which work of advertising revenue rather than direct sales, some like DFC work on a subscription only basis. Some just keep it small and managable. More and better variety. |
